e-MDs Practices: Life Tip of the Week #2
Tip: One of your biggest enemies is the lack of knowledge
Have you ever been in a situation in which you found yourself completely frustrated…a place in which you did not know where to turn…to the left, to the right, up or down? Although I may not know the exact set of circumstances you may be recalling, I am sure of one thing; you lacked the knowledge you needed in order to take action. When faced with that sort of situation it is often possible to have the same feeling as when encountering a dead-end street. The question becomes, “Now what do I do?!?”
When you lack knowledge in a particular area, it may be a good indication that you either need to grow in that area or you may need to get some help. Some people refer to this as needing a “Personal Coach”.
A few years ago I faced some major financial challenges. Although I have five college degrees, none of them required that I take courses in business or finance. Yet, I find that business and finance occupy almost every waking hour of my life! Regardless of what business you are in, that is probably true of you as well.
As I faced those financial challenges, I found someone who was good with money. I needed someone who understood principles that I did not understand. In other words, I found someone who had knowledge in an area where I was lacking. The old saying, “Ask and ye shall receive; seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you,” still works today. When you do not know what to do, it is wise to seek help from someone who has knowledge and experience you do not possess.
The same truth can be applied to your health. If you are sick, it is important to look for a good physician, but I would also recommend looking for someone who has had the same illness to see what they did to get well. There are many differing opinions and views in medicine, as in any other field. So, if someone can be found who has had a similar sickness and has recovered from it, that person might be one from whom new knowledge could be received.
If you have a legal question, I do not think the answer is to stop what you are doing and go to law school for three or four years. A better idea would be to find someone who has been in a similar situation and ask for advice. If nothing else, perhaps they know a good attorney who could help. Just a few weeks ago a friend of mine called looking for a good attorney. I am no lawyer, but I know how to recommend a good one to help someone else who is in a difficult situation.
This would work in real estate as well. If you need information about a property, talk to someone who spends eight hours a day, five days a week in that industry. They will have much more wisdom and knowledge than you will.
I have traveled all over the world and I have found that those who know the least about travel are often travel agents and people who work for the airlines. The ones who know the most about travel are those who travel! If you want to know something about a trip, talk to someone who has been there and they will be able to give you more tips than you might ever find by calling the airlines or a travel agent (unless, of course, they actually do a lot of traveling themselves.)
Do you see what I am trying to say? It is not so much a question of who has the credentials, but of who has the knowledge and experience. Credentials are important, but someone who has both knowledge and experience in a field will be the one who will be able to help you the most.
This is a simple but profound Tip. Do not allow yourself to become frustrated when you do not know something. Just learn and grow by finding someone who does have knowledge in the specific area in which you are interested. Most people are glad to help you if you will let them know you are in need of their wisdom. And remember in the process …experience trumps theory every time!!
Have a great week! God bless you!
