e-MDs Life Tip #17: Opportunity Is Everywhere
e-MDs Life Tip #17: Opportunity Is Everywhere
I am always amazed when I think about how much opportunity exists in the world. Everywhere I look, there is opportunity for someone to step up and better their personal relationships as well as their financial situation.
Since that is true, why does it seem that so many people are constantly complaining about the difficulty of their personal or financial condition? I believe it has to do with lack of vision and their inability to see the opportunities that exist right before their very eyes. The challenge is in learning to see what others cannot see, and that takes practice.
Even as I write, I find myself searching for the best way to communicate the message of this Tip. I want to help you see things that others have overlooked. In other words, I want to help you see what is now invisible.
Opportunity abounds in a country where freedom exists. When a person is free, they have the opportunity to explore possibilities that have not previously existed. Nearly every great invention has come out of need. We have all heard that necessity is the mother of invention. Maybe the way to recognize opportunity is to look for necessity. In other words, what needs to be done? Or, is there a better way to do something that has been done in the past but could be done better in the future?
I recently read that Google was the eleventh search engine that was created. If there were already ten search engines available, why did the inventors of Google give us another one? Simple – they thought they could do things better! What do you think? I would be willing to bet you have already “Googled” today!
I have a friend who recently started looking at the design of soap. She had an idea to design it and package it a little bit differently. It was just a cute idea that she liked and thought perhaps someone else might like it too. Bath and Body Works liked it so well that she had to lease a warehouse and hire workers to fulfill orders from that one large account. She even shared her product on QVC TV! When I heard that story, I couldn’t help thinking, “When was the last time there was a new idea to redesign soap?”
And that is the whole point of this Tip. There are thousands and thousands of new ideas and possibilities that exist in our environment and in our culture. However, it has been my experience that most people would rather complain, moan, and groan about something not being good rather than simply to do something about it and making things better. I have been that way myself, so I am certainly not trying to make anyone feel bad. But, as I have gotten older, I have learned that it is far better to step up and turn on the light and be positive than to sit back, curse the darkness and be negative.
I firmly believe that there may be a million-dollar idea in your mind. One of the challenges that you will face is the fear of stepping out into the unknown. I recently heard that fear of failure is a stronger motivator than the opportunity for success. That is very puzzling, but I certainly think it is true.
I have also heard that the wealthiest place in any town is the cemetery because of the millions of dollars of ideas that went to the grave in people’s minds.
I do not think I have the wisdom of Solomon by any standard of measurement. But, neither do I believe that I am unable to try things that have never been done before. I honestly think I have a million-dollar idea pass through my mind almost every day. I am learning to look for opportunity.
Let me encourage you to open your eyes and start looking for opportunity. Do not let fear grip your heart and prevent you from trying something that you think might work.
Consider the three necessary keys listed in this Tip…looking for opportunity, being in an environment (country) that is free, and not living in fear. If you consider those three options, it may begin to open up new worlds of creativity for you that you never knew existed. It is working for me and I know that it can work for you, too.
Tip: Opportunity is everywhere!
