e-MDs Life Tip # 13: Focus On Two Things In Life
e-MDs Life Tip #13 : Focus On Just Two Things In Life!
Many years ago I attended a luncheon hosted by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Dallas, Texas. At that time, Herschel Walker was the running back for the Dallas Cowboys and he was our guest speaker. Some of you may remember him because he led the University of Georgia Bulldogs to the national championship in 1980.
Herschel was quite an entertaining and colorful character. He always caught reporters off guard. As a freshman he entered a game against Tennessee and the first time he ever touched the ball he completely ran over a defensive back to score a touchdown. After the game a sports reporter said, “Herschel, is college football as easy as you make it look?” He answered, “I didn’t come to look. I came to play!” On another occasion when he was asked which professional team he wanted to play for, he responded by saying, “I have been looking into a career with the FBI.” The reporters were stunned. They really did not know how to respond to his reply.
I never will forget his talk at the luncheon that day. Although he mentioned some things about football and his own personal life, he closed with a story that has become one of the most important philosophies of my life.
Herschel said, “There are only two things in life you really have to worry about…whether you are going to stay healthy or whether you are going to get sick. If you are going to stay healthy, you really do not have anything to worry about. But, if you are going to get sick, then you have two new things to worry about…whether you are going to get better or whether you are going to get worse. If you are going to get better, you do not have anything to worry about. But, if you are going to get worse, then you have two new things to worry about…whether you are going to live or whether you are going to die. If you are going to live, you do not have anything to worry about. But, if you are going to die, you have two new things to worry about…whether you are going to heaven or whether you are going to hell. If you are going to heaven, you do not have anything to worry about. But, if you are going to hell, you have something new to worry about and for a long, LONG time!”
The audience laughed but Herschel drove his point home rather strongly. He reminded all of us that he believed that there is another life each of us will enter into at the appointed time.
The reason I say that this has become one of my most important philosophies of life is because I see, although in a very simple manner, that everything in life really does boil down to two issues. All of us are somewhere on the journey between those two issues. I hope this causes us to stop and reflect on our journey and where it will all end.
While I want these Tips to be encouraging and uplifting, at the same time, I want them to be filled with wisdom. While I want to be as kind as possible, I also want each of us to consider important matters, even if they are somewhat controversial. Life is all about making wise choices. And, what would make you wiser or what could be more important than knowing where you are going to spend eternity?
Herschel Walker has taken care of that issue in his life and I know I have as well. How about you?
Tip: Just two things!
